Common questions
- Do I file a state tax form in every state where I earn gig income?
- Usually you file only in the state where you live. If you work in another state (or drive deliveries across a state line), that state may also require a nonresident return on the income earned there.
- Which federal forms do all gig workers file?
- Everyone with self-employment income files Form 1040 with Schedule C (business profit) and Schedule SE (self-employment tax). If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, you also make quarterly payments with Form 1040-ES.
- What if my state has no income tax?
- In Florida, Texas, Washington, Nevada, and Tennessee there is no state income tax return, but you may still owe local business taxes — Washington's B&O tax, Tennessee's local business tax, or city business licenses — each with its own form.
- Are city tax forms filed with my state return?
- Sometimes. Indiana's county tax and New York City's income tax are part of the state return. Ohio cities (RITA/CCA), Michigan cities, and Pennsylvania's local earned income tax all use separate forms filed with separate agencies.
- What happens if I file the wrong form or miss one?
- You'll typically get a notice plus penalties and interest. Filing the missing return quickly and paying the balance limits the damage — late-filing penalties grow monthly until the return is in.
