Upwork Hourly Rate Calculator

Find the hourly rate to put on your Upwork profile so that after the 10% fee, withdrawal costs, tax, and unbilled hours you still keep the income you planned.

Your profile rate is not your income. This works backwards from the money you want to keep to the number a client should see.

Set your Upwork hourly rate

A $30 Upwork rate is not $30 an hour. Upwork's 10% fee, withdrawal costs, tax, and the hours you spend on proposals all come off the top. Enter the income you want to keep and this returns the rate to put on your profile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set my hourly rate on Upwork?
Work backwards. Take the yearly income you want to keep, gross it up for tax, add business expenses, then divide by realistic billable hours and divide again by 0.90 to cover Upwork's 10% fee.
What does a $30 Upwork rate really pay?
After the 10% service fee you keep $27, and after withdrawal and conversion costs closer to $26.50. Subtract tax and unbilled hours and the real figure is often nearer $16 to $18 an hour of working time.
How many billable hours should I plan for?
25 to 30 hours a week over 46 weeks is realistic for a full-time freelancer. Proposals, admin, and skill-building fill the rest, so building your rate on 40 hours understates it badly.
Should I raise my rate or work more hours?
Raise the rate. Hours are capped and expensive in energy; price is not. A $5 increase across 1,150 billable hours is over $5,000 a year after fees, for the same workload.
Do I charge less because I am from a lower-cost country?
Clients buy outcomes, not your local rent. Cost of living sets your floor — this calculator's output — but the ceiling comes from the value of the work, which is why identical skills earn very different rates on the same platform.
Does the rate change between hourly and fixed-price contracts?
The 10% service fee applies to both. Use your hourly floor to price fixed projects: estimate hours, add a buffer of 20% to 30% for revisions, then quote a single number.
