India Freelance Rate Calculator

Work out the hourly rate, day rate, and monthly billing target that actually deliver the take-home you want in rupees.

Price from your life, not from what competitors charge. Tax, business costs, platform fees, and non-billable hours are all added back so the rate holds up.

Work backwards from the life you want

Most Indian freelancers price by guessing what sounds reasonable. Start from the money you need in hand each month, then add back tax, business costs, platform fees, and the hours you can realistically bill.

Rate you must quote
₹1,565 / hour
Day rate (8 hours)
₹12,522
Billing target per month
₹1,50,000
Billable hours per year

Effective tax on receipts

From your target back to the invoice

Take-home wanted (year)₹14,40,000
Add tax payable+ ₹0
Add business costs+ ₹1,80,000
Receipts needed in your bank₹16,20,000
Add platform/payment fee (10%)+ ₹1,80,000
Total you must invoice₹18,00,000

If the hourly number feels impossible for your market, the fix is usually fewer non-billable hours or a higher-value niche — not a longer week. Educational estimate, not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate in India?
Start from the take-home you need per year, add the tax you will owe on it, add your yearly business costs, then divide by the hours you can genuinely bill. Finally gross up for platform or payment fees so the fee is not coming out of your own margin.
How many hours can a freelancer actually bill?
Most full-time Indian freelancers bill 25 to 30 hours a week across 44 to 46 weeks. Proposals, client calls, invoicing, and learning are real work but nobody pays for them, so pricing on 40 billable hours quietly cuts your rate by a third.
Should my rate include tax?
Always. Under Section 44ADA you are taxed on 50% of receipts, so the effective tax on your invoices is lower than your slab rate — but it is never zero. Price tax in rather than discovering it at advance tax time.
How much should I add for Upwork or Fiverr fees?
Upwork charges freelancers 10% and Fiverr 20%, plus withdrawal and currency conversion of roughly 1% to 2%. Divide your target rate by 0.90 (Upwork) or 0.80 (Fiverr) instead of subtracting the fee afterwards.
Is an hourly rate or a project rate better?
Use this hourly figure as your internal floor, then quote projects. Fixed pricing rewards you for getting faster, while hourly billing quietly punishes it — but you still need the hourly number to sanity-check any quote.
How often should I raise my rate?
Review every six months and with every new client. A 10% annual increase roughly keeps pace with Indian inflation plus skill growth; long-standing clients at old rates are the most common reason experienced freelancers stall.
