How to Set a Freelance Rate in India That Actually Pays You

Ask ten Indian freelancers how they picked their rate and nine will describe the same method: look at what someone slightly more experienced charges, subtract a little out of nervousness, and hope. It is the reason talented people plateau at income that barely tracks a salaried job. Pricing is arithmetic before it is confidence, and the arithmetic runs backwards — from the life you want to the number on the proposal.

Start at take-home, not at the market

Decide what you need in your account each month after tax — rent, EMI, family, savings, the emergency buffer freelancers need more than anyone. That figure is the only fixed point in the calculation. Market rates tell you whether your number is sellable; they cannot tell you whether it is survivable.

Add back the tax the invoice hides

Nothing is withheld from a freelance payment, so every rupee that arrives is pre-tax. Under Section 44ADA you are taxed on half your receipts, which softens the blow, but effective tax still runs several percent of everything you bill once you pass the Rs 12 lakh rebate. Price it in as a line item you never see, and pay it in the four advance tax instalments rather than in one March panic.

Count only the hours a client will pay for

This is where most rates quietly collapse. Proposals, discovery calls, invoicing, follow-ups on late payments, learning the new tool a client expects you to know — all real work, none of it billable. A sustainable full-time freelancer bills roughly 25 to 30 hours a week over 44 to 46 weeks, which is around 1,200 billable hours a year, not 2,080. Divide by the honest number and your rate rises by a third without a single difficult conversation.

Gross up for platform and payment fees

Upwork takes 10%, Fiverr 20%, and moving money into an Indian account costs another 1% to 2% between withdrawal charges and the exchange-rate margin. Subtracting the fee after the fact means you funded it. Divide instead: a Rs 2,000 target on Upwork is a Rs 2,222 quote. The same logic applies to direct clients paying by wire.

Set the floor, then price by value

The output of this method is a floor — the rate below which the year does not work. Above it, price on outcomes. A landing page that lifts a client's conversions is not worth the hours it took; a fixed project price lets speed reward you instead of penalising you. Keep the hourly figure internal and use it to sanity-check every fixed quote you send.

Raise it on a schedule, not on courage

Put a date in the calendar every six months. New clients get the new rate immediately; existing ones get notice and a reason — expanded scope, deeper expertise, a fuller pipeline. Long-loyal clients on two-year-old rates are the single most common brake on an experienced Indian freelancer's income, and the fix is a short email, not a new skill.

Frequently asked questions

+What is a good freelance hourly rate in India?

There is no universal figure. Run your own take-home target, tax, costs, and billable hours through the rate calculator; for full-time freelancers serving overseas clients, floors commonly land between Rs 1,200 and Rs 3,500 an hour.

+How do I price when clients compare me to cheaper freelancers?

Compete on outcome and reliability, not price. Quote fixed project prices with clear deliverables so the comparison stops being an hourly one.

+Should I charge Indian and foreign clients the same?

Your floor is the same, because your costs and tax are. What differs is what each market will bear, so many freelancers keep a domestic rate card and an export rate card.

+How many billable hours should I plan?

About 25 to 30 a week over 44 to 46 weeks. Anything built on 40 billable hours quietly underprices you.

+Do I include GST in my rate?

GST is charged on top of your fee once you are registered, not absorbed into it. Exports are typically zero-rated under a letter of undertaking.
