Frequently asked questions
- What write-offs can Uber drivers claim in 2026?
- Online miles at $0.70 per mile, Uber service fees and booking fees withheld from your fares, the business share of your phone plan, tolls and airport fees, rider water and snacks, dash cam and mounts, car washes and detailing, and the business-use share of auto loan interest.
- Which Uber miles are deductible?
- Every mile driven with the app on: cruising for requests, driving to a pickup, the trip itself, and repositioning between rides. Uber's tax summary lists on-trip miles only, so your own log is usually the higher and correct number.
- Are Uber's fees really deductible?
- Yes. Your 1099-K or tax summary reports gross fares, so the service fee, booking fee, and airport surcharges Uber kept must be deducted as business expenses or you will be taxed on money you never received.
- Can I deduct gas if I use the mileage rate?
- No. Gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation are all inside the $0.70 rate. Tolls, parking, and airport fees are separate and still deductible.
- Is a car lease deductible for Uber?
- Yes, at business-use percentage, but only under the actual expense method. If you claim standard mileage instead, the lease payment is already covered by the rate.
- How much should an Uber driver expect to save?
- A driver with 25,000 online miles gets a $17,500 mileage deduction, which for most drivers removes $4,000–$6,000 of combined self-employment and income tax.
