Side Hustle Taxes in 2026: How to Handle Them When You Also Have a W-2 Job
Most side hustlers aren't full-time freelancers — they have a paycheck and earn extra on evenings and weekends. That combination opens one of the easiest tax tricks around: you may never need to make a quarterly payment at all. Check your total with the side hustle tax calculator.
When side hustle income becomes taxable
All of it is taxable income, with or without a 1099. Once your net side profit reaches $400 in a year, you also owe 15.3% self-employment tax and must file Schedule SE.
Why the day job raises your rate
Your side profit sits on top of your salary, so it's taxed at your highest bracket. If your wages already put you in the 22% bracket, each extra side-hustle dollar pays 22% income tax plus about 14% SE tax — around 36% before state tax.
The W-4 shortcut
Instead of quarterly estimated payments, increase withholding at your day job. On Form W-4, line 4(c) lets you add a fixed extra amount per paycheck. Withholding counts as paid evenly through the year, so it can even fix an underpayment late in the year.
Hobby or business?
If you try to make a profit, keep records and treat it seriously, it's a business and you can deduct expenses. Hobby income is still taxable but hobby expenses aren't deductible — a big reason to run your side hustle like a business.
Deductions that matter for side hustles
Supplies, platform and payment fees, mileage driven for the side gig, a share of phone and internet, software, and a home office only if the space is used exclusively for the business.
Frequently asked questions

Only if you'll owe $1,000 or more after withholding. Many side hustlers avoid quarterlies by raising W-4 withholding at their job.

A genuine business loss can offset wages, but repeated losses can trigger hobby scrutiny.
+How much of my side income should I save?
With a day job, save 30–35% of side profit, since it's taxed at your top bracket plus SE tax.
