Etsy Taxes: Sales Tax vs Income Tax, Explained Simply
New Etsy sellers often hear 'Etsy handles the taxes' and stop there. That's half true. Etsy does collect and send sales tax to the states for almost every order. It does not pay your income tax or self-employment tax — and those are the bigger bills. Here's how to keep the two separate so you don't overpay or underpay. Estimate what you'll owe in the Etsy tax calculator.
Sales tax: mostly Etsy's job
Sales tax is charged to buyers, not to you. Under marketplace facilitator laws, Etsy calculates, collects and remits it to US states on your behalf. You usually don't need to file sales tax returns for Etsy orders. The exception: if you also sell at craft fairs, on your own website or in person, those sales may need your own state seller's permit.
Income tax: always yours
Your profit — sales minus Etsy fees, materials, shipping, packaging, ads and other costs — is self-employment income. You owe federal income tax, 15.3% self-employment tax on profit over $400, and any state income tax. Nothing is withheld, so quarterly estimated payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15.
Why your 1099-K looks too high
Your 1099-K can include the sales tax buyers paid and shows gross sales before fees. Don't pay income tax on the 1099-K number. Start with gross, subtract any sales tax Etsy collected (it's in your Etsy annual summary), then deduct fees and costs. What remains is the profit you report on Schedule C.
Hobby or business?
If you're trying to make money, keep records and run it like a shop, you're a business — which is good, because only businesses can deduct expenses. Hobby income is still taxable, but hobby expenses can't be deducted. Most Etsy sellers who sell regularly should file as a business.
A clean year-end routine
Download Etsy's annual CSV and sales tax summary, total your material and supply receipts, add shipping labels and Etsy Ads, and calculate your home studio space. With those five numbers you can complete Schedule C in under an hour.
Frequently asked questions
+Do I pay sales tax on Etsy sales?
In most cases no. Etsy collects and remits sales tax for orders to US states. Off-Etsy sales may need your own permit.
+Is the 1099-K amount my taxable income?
No. It's gross sales and may include sales tax. Your taxable income is profit after fees and expenses.
+Does Etsy withhold income tax?
No. You're responsible for income and self-employment tax, usually through quarterly estimated payments.
+Do I owe tax if I made under $600 on Etsy?
Yes, if your profit is $400 or more you owe self-employment tax, and all profit is reportable regardless of whether you got a 1099-K.
