Does Etsy Charge Sales Tax on Top of Seller Fees?

A buyer pays one total, Etsy shows several deductions, and your deposit is smaller again. It is easy to read those lines as the same charge twice. The short answer: buyer sales tax and seller fees are different amounts. For qualifying US orders, Etsy collects and remits sales tax; some fees can still be calculated using an amount that includes that tax. Here is how to follow one order through your records without confusing a tax collection with a shop expense.

Three amounts to separate before checking your payout

Start with the item price and any buyer-paid shipping. Next identify sales tax collected from the buyer. Finally identify seller charges such as transaction and payment-processing fees. Where Etsy collects and remits the sales tax, it is not money you keep as shop revenue. Seller fees, by contrast, are costs of using the platform. A small deposit alone cannot tell you which line caused the difference: refunds, shipping labels and other account activity can affect it too.

Does sales tax increase every Etsy fee?

No single calculation applies to every fee. Etsy's US transaction-fee guidance excludes sales tax from that fee's calculation, while Etsy Payments processing fees are assessed on the total sale, including applicable tax and shipping. That means a processing charge can reflect buyer sales tax without the tax itself becoming another seller fee. The rules and amounts depend on your payment-account country, fee type and order circumstances. Check Etsy's current fee schedule rather than applying one percentage to every line.

A simple order example: follow the money, not one percentage

Imagine a US order with a $50 item, $5 shipping and $4 buyer sales tax. The buyer pays $59. Where Etsy remits the $4 tax, the seller's item-and-shipping receipts are $55 before seller fees or other adjustments. The US transaction-fee base in this simplified example is $55; the payment-processing base is $59. Those are calculation bases, not the fee amounts. Your deposit will depend on the applicable fees and any other account activity. These figures are illustrative, not a quoted Etsy fee schedule.

Why the 1099-K and deposit do not match

Etsy's explanation of its 1099-K calculation says Etsy-collected and remitted sales tax is excluded from the reported gross total. Gross reporting is still not net profit: seller fees and refunds can produce differences from deposits. Use Etsy's actual form and transaction records to reconcile the amounts. Do not assume a general statement about other platforms' 1099-K forms applies to Etsy, and do not subtract marketplace-remitted tax again if it was already excluded. If a form appears wrong, investigate with Etsy before filing.

A monthly check that prevents double-counting

Keep the order export, Payment account statement, fee details, refunds and deposit record together. Reconcile buyer payments to seller receipts, then reconcile receipts to fees and other adjustments. Record each eligible business fee once. If you started with a net payout, do not deduct the same fees again without first rebuilding gross receipts. Before using the Etsy tax calculator, establish what your sales input includes; a calculator cannot determine which deductions were already taken in your source number.

Marketplace sales tax is not your income-tax payment

Etsy remitting buyer sales tax does not settle your federal income or self-employment tax. Nor does it automatically settle registration or reporting duties for direct sales, craft fairs or another website. Ask the relevant state revenue agency about your own obligations, even when Etsy handles collection on marketplace orders. Keep those questions separate from estimating tax on business profit.

Official sources for checking your own statement

Compare your records with Etsy's fees and taxes guide, Etsy Payments processing fees, US sales tax on Etsy orders and Etsy's 1099-K calculation. For the federal distinction between gross payments and taxable income, see IRS guidance on Form 1099-K. This is general recordkeeping guidance, not an assessment of your account.

Frequently asked questions

+Is buyer sales tax another Etsy seller fee?

No. It is a separate tax collection. Where Etsy collects and remits it, you do not keep it as shop revenue. Some seller fees nevertheless use a calculation base that includes applicable sales tax.

+Are all Etsy fees calculated on the same amount?

No. Etsy's US transaction-fee guidance excludes sales tax, while Etsy Payments processing fees use the total sale including applicable tax and shipping. Check the current rules for your account country and fee type.

+Should I subtract Etsy-collected sales tax from my 1099-K again?

Not if it is already excluded. Etsy says its 1099-K calculation excludes sales tax it collects and remits. Reconcile your actual form and records before making adjustments.

+Does Etsy paying sales tax cover my income tax?

No. Marketplace sales-tax collection is separate from tax on your business profit and from any obligations on off-platform sales.
