Frequently asked questions
- Do I pay self-employment tax on affiliate commissions?
- Yes. Affiliate commissions are self-employment income, so net profit above $400 is subject to the 15.3% self-employment tax (12.4% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base plus 2.9% Medicare) on top of federal and state income tax.
- Will Amazon Associates send me a 1099?
- Amazon and most networks issue a 1099-NEC once you cross $600 in commissions for the year, and payment processors issue a 1099-K at the $2,500 threshold for 2026. You must report the income even if no form arrives.
- What can affiliate marketers deduct?
- Hosting and domains, email and SEO software, paid ads, content production gear, sample products you review, home office space, business use of your phone and internet, and mileage for business travel.
- How much of my affiliate income should I set aside for taxes?
- Most affiliate marketers set aside 25–35% of net profit. Run your real numbers in the calculator, because the correct rate depends on your filing status, other income, and state.
- Do I need to make quarterly estimated payments?
- Yes, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. Federal 1040-ES payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year.
- Is affiliate income reported on Schedule C?
- Yes. Report gross commissions as receipts on Schedule C, subtract your business expenses, and the line 31 net profit flows to Schedule SE and Form 1040.
