Your Instacart 1099-NEC, Explained Line by Line

Every January, full-service Instacart shoppers who earned $600 or more get a 1099-NEC — and most of them stare at Box 1 wondering why the number is bigger than what hit their bank account. It is not a mistake, and it is not the amount you owe tax on. This guide decodes the form and shows what actually gets taxed. For your real number after deductions, run your figures through the [Instacart tax calculator](https://gigmytax.com/calculators/instacart-tax).

What the 1099-NEC actually is

The 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation) is an information return. Instacart sends one copy to you and one to the IRS, reporting the gross amount it paid you as an independent contractor. Nothing was withheld from it — no income tax, no Social Security, no Medicare. The form's job is simply to tell the IRS you received this money; your job is to report the same income on Schedule C and then subtract your business deductions.

Why Box 1 is higher than your deposits

Box 1 shows gross batch pay and tips before anything you spent to earn it. It does not subtract your gas, your phone bill, your insulated bags, or the miles between stores. If you earned $30,000 on the app but spent $9,000 worth of deductible mileage and supplies, Box 1 still says $30,000 — the deductions happen on your Schedule C, not on the form. Shoppers who panic at the gross figure and set aside 30% of it are overpaying the IRS all year.

Where each number goes on your return

Box 1 flows to Schedule C, Line 1 (gross receipts). Your mileage deduction (2026 rate: $0.70 per business mile) and other expenses land in Part II of the same form. Schedule C's bottom line — your net profit — then feeds three places: Form 1040 as income, Schedule SE to compute the 15.3% self-employment tax, and Schedule 1 for the deduction worth half of that SE tax. The 1099-NEC itself never gets attached to your return; you keep it for your records.

What about the 1099-K?

Instacart pays shoppers directly, so the 1099-NEC is the form that matters. Payment apps like PayPal or Venmo you use for side income issue 1099-Ks, which follow separate thresholds. Never add both forms together for the same income — that double-counts it.

You owe tax even without the form

The $600 threshold only controls whether Instacart must issue the form. If you earned $450 in a short stint, no 1099-NEC arrives, but the income is still taxable and still goes on Schedule C. The reverse is also true: if the form is late or wrong, you file using your own records. The IRS matches returns against forms it received, so your reported income should never be lower than the total of your 1099s.

Fixing a wrong 1099-NEC

If Box 1 does not match your earnings summary in the Shopper app, request a corrected form from Instacart support in writing and keep the confirmation. Do not simply file with a lower number — the IRS computer will flag the mismatch against the original form. If a correction never arrives, file with the correct amount and attach a brief statement explaining the discrepancy.

The deadlines that matter

Instacart must deliver your 1099-NEC by February 1, 2027 for the 2026 tax year. Your quarterly estimated payments were due April 15, June 15, and September 15 of 2026, with the final one due January 15, 2027. Your Form 1040 with Schedule C is due April 15, 2027. Shoppers who wait for the form in February before thinking about taxes have already missed three of the four payment dates — which is exactly why the underpayment penalty exists.

Frequently asked questions

+When does Instacart send the 1099-NEC?

By February 1, 2027 for tax year 2026, usually electronically through the Shopper app or email if you opted in.

+Why is my 1099 higher than what I received?

Box 1 shows gross pay before your mileage, phone, and supply costs. Those deductions come off on Schedule C, so you are taxed on net profit, not the gross figure.

+Do I pay tax on the full Box 1 amount?

No. You subtract business deductions on Schedule C and pay income tax plus 15.3% self-employment tax on the net profit only.

+What if I earned less than $600 from Instacart?

No form is issued, but the income is still taxable. Report it on Schedule C using your app earnings records.

+My 1099-NEC is wrong. What do I do?

Request a corrected form from Instacart in writing. If it never comes, file with your accurate records and include an explanation statement.

+Does the 1099-NEC get sent with my tax return?

No. Keep it for your records. The IRS already has its copy; you only transcribe the income onto Schedule C.
