Amazon Flex Tax Calculator: Turning Block Pay Into Take-Home Pay in 2026
A four-hour Flex block advertised at $90 is not $90 of income. Amazon withholds nothing, self-employment tax claims 15.3% of profit, and your own vehicle absorbs the fuel and wear. An Amazon Flex tax calculator reduces all of that to one usable figure: the share of each block that belongs to the IRS.
How Amazon Flex reports your earnings
Flex drivers are independent contractors. Amazon issues a 1099-NEC through its tax portal when block pay and tips reach $600 for the calendar year, delivered by 31 January. Below that threshold no form is issued, but every dollar remains reportable. Customer tips passed through the app are included in the reported total and are fully taxable.
The taxes that apply
Self-employment tax at 15.3% on 92.35% of net profit funds Social Security and Medicare, since no employer is paying the other half. Federal income tax applies at your marginal rate on top, and state income tax where you live. Flex income also stacks on top of any W-2 job, which can push part of it into a higher bracket than drivers expect.
Mileage from station to last drop
At $0.70 per business mile for 2026, mileage is the deduction that makes Flex viable. Deductible driving includes the trip to the delivery station, the entire route, any return to the station for a second block, and driving between blocks while working.
The commute question
Driving from home to the station is normally a commute. If you have a qualifying home office as your principal place of business for administrative work, that first trip becomes deductible — a distinction worth several hundred dollars a year for regular drivers.
Route miles add up fast
A typical 3.5-hour block covers 45 to 70 miles. Four blocks a week for a year is roughly 12,000 miles, or an $8,400 deduction.
Deductions beyond mileage
Phone and data at the business-use percentage, a phone mount and charger, hand trucks and delivery totes, safety vest and gloves, parking and tolls during blocks, roadside assistance, car washes, and the self-employed health insurance and retirement adjustments.
Worked example: 12 blocks a month
Block pay and tips totalling $19,800 for the year with 11,500 business miles and $700 of phone and gear. Mileage deducts $8,050, leaving net profit near $11,050. Self-employment tax lands around $1,561, with modest federal income tax after the standard deduction — versus roughly $2,798 of SE tax alone if mileage went unclaimed.
What to set aside per block
Track mileage properly and 15% to 20% of block pay is generally enough. Without a log, set aside 30%. Drivers who also hold a W-2 job can instead increase withholding on that job's W-4 and skip quarterly filings entirely — often the simplest route for part-time Flex work.
Quarterly payments for Flex drivers
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, estimated payments are due 15 April, 15 June, 15 September, and 15 January. Safe harbour of 100% of last year's tax (110% above $150,000 prior-year AGI) protects you from penalties no matter how the current year turns out.
Records Amazon does not keep for you
The Flex app shows earnings but no usable mileage record. Maintain your own log with date, block start and end odometer, and total miles, plus January and December odometer readings. Download the annual earnings summary from the Amazon tax portal and store the 1099-NEC alongside your log.
Flex alongside other gig work
If you also drive for DoorDash, Uber, or Spark, report everything on one Schedule C as a single delivery business. Combined profit determines your SE tax, and a single mileage log covering all platforms is easier to defend than several partial ones.
Frequently asked questions
+How much tax do Amazon Flex drivers pay?
Usually 15% to 25% of block pay after mileage — 15.3% self-employment tax on net profit plus income tax at your bracket.
+Does Amazon Flex send a 1099?
Yes, a 1099-NEC when earnings reach $600 for the year, available through Amazon's tax portal by 31 January.
+Can I deduct the drive to the delivery station?
It is normally a commute. It becomes deductible if your home qualifies as your principal place of business under the home office rules.
+Are Amazon Flex tips taxable?
Yes. Tips are included in your reported earnings and are taxable self-employment income.
+Do Flex drivers need to pay quarterly taxes?
Yes if you expect to owe $1,000 or more, unless you cover the liability through increased withholding at a W-2 job.
+What if I drive Flex part-time alongside a job?
Flex profit is added to your wages on the same return. Many part-timers simply raise W-4 withholding rather than filing quarterly estimates.
